Abundant in lush forests, rocky bluffs, and cascading waterfalls, the Hickory Nut Gorge is a wonderland of terrain and ecology. With nearly 20,000 acres of public lands and protected private property, this side of the Blue Ridge Escarpment is a sanctuary for several rare plants and animals, and hosts a bustling tourism scene rooted in outdoor recreation. Plenty of opportunities exist for hiking, biking, paddling, climbing, and more.

Major trailheads include Strawberry Gap, Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, Bearwallow Gap, Eagle Rock, Buffalo Creek Park, Chimney Rock Village Boulders, Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park, and Dittmer-Watts Nature Trail Park. These access areas and trails are products of longstanding professional collaborations, yet are often maintained by volunteers.
